Pwllheli 16 Ammanford 19

Translated from Pwllheli's report: http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pwllheli/rygbi/gemau/95-96/pwllheli16rhydaman19.htm

This was a game both teams needed to win to move away from the bottom of the table before the last game of the season next week. Ammanford beat Pwllheli easily on their own pitch just before Christmas and had full confidence of being able to repeat the result.

Ammanford started the brighter with Pool looking a bit tired after the loss in Carmarthen week earlier. The confidence of the visitors became apparent after just two minutes when they refused an easy kick for goal and chose to run the ball. The move failed but within minutes they were awarded another next kick and full-back Darryl Parkin gave his team the lead 3-0.

Richard Lloyd Jones scored a penalty to bring Pwllheli level after seven minutes. With Ammanford winning the line-outs and scrums easily and Pwllheli struggling to hold the weight, penalty after penalty came the way of the visitors. Parkin scored two of these after 12 and 20 minutes. Ammanford went further ahead after 26 minutes. Following another penalty, captain Gareth Potter went over near the posts and with the conversion the score rose to 16-3 with Pwllheli struggling to stay in the game.

Pwllheli had to raise their game at the end of the half and Lloyd Jones went close with a kick and John Richard Williams went even closer but there was no change of score before the break.

Much like several other occasions during the season Pwllheli’s performance was much better in the second half. Mike Chapman scored a drop goal after 7 minutes with Lloyd Jones adding a penalty after 16 minutes Pwllheli were back in the game.

Ammanford had only two opportunities throughout the second half, the first of these a controversial penalty kick to say the least, but Parkin was able to convert to make the score 9-19.

Despite this blow Pwllheli continued to attack. There was a lot of quick ball reaching the three quarters giving Huw Evans a chance to score a try near the line after 26 minutes, the best move of the game was crowned with a great conversion by Lloyd Jones.

With the score standing at 16-19 and Pwllheli continuing to press there was a feeling that there would be chances to win. Pwllheli had several chances and 3 minutes from time Colin Jones went over for a try only to the referee to disallow it.

I just wish Pwllheli would play the same way in the first half.
