Ystalyfera Home

Ammanford 19 Ystalyfera 26

A tough game against the top of the table visitors Ystalyfera ended in a frustrating loss in a game that should have been at least a draw for the home team.

Ammanfors pack were expecting a hard time but on the whole held their own. The home side started well with prop Rhodri Jones scoring from a catch and drive at a line out. For much of the half Ammanford attacked well  and were close to adding to their lead. However, the game turned on its head either side of half time. Firstly a poor clearance kick gave the visitors their opening try, 5-5. Fera added pressure and were helped by some weak refereeing at the scrum and in the sixth minute of extra time he awarded the visitors a penalty try, 5-12. When asked why the penalty try was awarded he admitted to being not too sure what was happening in the scrum.

From the restart Ammanford shot themselves in the foot when some poor handling gave the visitors a scrum from which some sharp work saw them score in the corners and a fine conversion took the score to 5-19. The visitors kept up the pressure and looked the top team they are going on to score a further try. Coach Chris Jones rung the changes and this seemed to galvanise the home team. Moving the ball well a powerfull burst up the middle by centre Paul Davies saw the ball moved wide and wing Dafydd Pritchard carried three defenders over to score, 12-26.

With the pressure now on and Ammanford looking very positive the visitors conceeded two yellow cards in close proximity. Ammanford took advantage of the two man advantage and from close range Davies again powered through to score, 19-26.

Ammanford stayed on the attack until the end of the game but lack of composure and poor hands ment they failed to get the equalising score that they deserved for such a positive performance.

Next Saturday they visit Bonymaen who are second in the league and one hopes for an equally good performance.
