Ammanford 45 Tondu 20

What was the highlight this weekend for Ammanford RFC? The first league win of the season, wing Steffan Howells’s four tries or the fact that the club put out Three Senior teams. The Athletic played away at Tycroes 2nd XV, BaaBaas home to Penygroes and the first team home to Tondu.

The first team game started following the familiar pattern of plenty of ball for Ammanford, but much of the play going left and right with the opposition making rare visits to the home half and as a result the score after 20min was 3-6, all penalties.

It took skipper Chris Morris to get the ball rolling with a crashing break and a 22m gallop to the line, outside half Steff Roberts added the extras, 10-6.

Ammanford were soon back on the attack a lovely move was rounded off by Howells who stepped inside the defence for his first try, 17-6. Tondu came back onto the attack but the home defence held, a long kick out took a terrible rugby ball bounce and luckily for Ammanford found the open arms of full back Ceri Rees who had chased hard. He ran the last 50m unopposed with a silly grin on his face, 22-6.

The start of the second half got off to the worst possible start for the home team with a picky referee issuing two yellow card within a minute of each other. Tondu took advantage to score, 22-13. The dominant home pack stepped up to the mark and the remaining six forwards led superbly by flanker Steffan Rees kept the ball tight to run the clock down until they could get back to full strength.

A long kick out of defence found the Ammannford wing who threw a long inside pass to Howells who set off on a big arcing run, a quick one two with supporting centre Paul Davies, saw Howells go over for his second 29-13. Within minutes Ammanford were again in full flow which found Howells free to get his hat trick. 36-13

Tondu came back hard and a lovely angle cut by the visiting inside centre saw him go over under the posts, 36-20. Ammanfords dominant pack turned a scrum over. The ball was this time moved wide for Rees to get his second. 41-20. With replacements on all sides a crafty chip by Owen Higgins found youth centre Carwyn Morris on his debut, his well-timed pass put Howells away for his fourth, 45-20.

The home club was full of smiles for the win and for the 60 senior players who had performed for the club over the weekend.
